delay the substance!

the previous post about flash animation (or just animation in general) reminded me a half-finished animation project I did for a class in college. at some point I need to finish it up. if you're curious, you can watch its very rough version here.

it probably is no surprise that I'm a little bit into bleach, the anime. episode 121 is one of my more favorite ones, particularly the (new!) opening sequence. one of the hardest thing to animate is a sense of scale, both intimate and grand. to make something look heavy or feel soft is mark of amazing animation -- the fact that it bypasses rationalization. That's how I feel about the hand holding that begins at 30 seconds.

beautiful.

edit it seems that a lot of these things go on youtube fairly quickly. I've been very pleased with veoh for my anime needs :P

"[bleach bleach bleach]! I love [bleach]! I would shovel it down my throat if I could!"

"Of course [I'm kidding]. I would chew it slowly and stop when I was full."

-Jane Lane

I love anime for so many different reasons: its cultivation of an eclectic visual sensibility, its commitment to the mercurial emotional changes of life, and the no-holds-barred kooky treatment of landmine/hotbutton topics including homosexuality and pedophilia, which can be a mite uncomfortable.

In any case, episode 33 is *brilliant* dramma giocoso. More giocoso than dramma, but the penultimate scene is very knowingly done, I think. Anyway, this is hilarious, especially for the power rangers and thundercats references!

I would love to work at the intersection of opera and animation, particularly this kind of animation.

bleach marathon!

There's currently a (dubbed) Bleach marathon on Cartoon Network (mmmm, cable...mmmm, television in general) and pretty interesting Food Network shows to flip between (lots of Rachael Ray, Giada de Laurentiis, Paula Deen even). And even though I've never watched Bleach before tonight, I've heard if it often enough to have watched one episode (and then another, and another, and another....) Anyway, this post will be "short" (hee hee).

I'm also surreptitiously checking on the bread dough that's rising. It's the first time I'm trying the no-knead bread that made such a splash in the NYT. Hee hee!

Anyhow, the latest Puritani bcast seems to have rocked the NYC opera-blogging community, including at my favorite intermissions, the wellsungs, an unamplified voice, if only to report prods written by Siegelinde here, here, and here.

As it happened by chance, I stumbled across some pretty lovely leggiero singing by Maria Malatesta CalabrĂ², the italo-argentine 80+ year old I youtubed previously here. Here's a playlist gathered from the sound files shared on her website.

Now back to Bleach!
